Environmental Impact: How Sustainable is Digital Publishing?

Blog Article

While environmental impact is an important consideration for an eco-conscious author or reader in the conversation surrounding digital versus traditional publishing, it often sadly becomes a secondary concern.

Traditional publishing uses vast quantities of paper, water, and energy in its printing, binding, and shipping procedures. Each year millions of unsold books are dumped into landfills. Digital publishing, on the other hand, uses no physical materials and thus is able to considerably reduce the carbon footprint.

This is not to say that there are no adverse effects at all. E-readers and tablets require energy and raw materials for their manufacture. However, studies show that, assuming these devices are used to read 20-30 books, e-readers are considerably more eco-friendly than print copies.

Digital publishing also allows on-demand printing—producing only those books that are sold, thus reducing waste. Adopting one of these avenues is one step towards reducing the carbon footprint.
